The life of Elizabeth Smith Snow

Text size

Biography

Elizabeth Snow appears directly in the probate record of her husband, Lieutenant Jabez Snow. The estate was appraised on April 20, 1691. A published abstract of the Barnstable County probate records, covering Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts, identifies Elizabeth as his widow and records her oath to the appraisal. A later family account gives the oath's date as April 22.

This was a formal act in the administration of the family property. Elizabeth was not merely named as a survivor: she attested to the inventory used in settling the estate. The later account dates the settlement to April 1695 and reports an allowance for her widow's thirds.

Their children included Jabez, born in 1670, and sons Edward and Thomas. The elder Jabez's death left Elizabeth with both her position as a widow entitled to a share of the property and a role in the proceedings through which the estate was described and divided.
