The life of Phebe Snow Smith

Text size

Biography

Phebe Snow appears in her father's will under her married name, Phebe Smith. On October 11, 1743 Jabez Snow named her with her sisters Elisabeth Knowles and Tabitha Mayo as beneficiaries of his personal estate. After debts, funeral costs and their mother's portion, the remainder was to be divided equally among the three women. He also stated that each had already received substantial assistance, without itemizing those earlier gifts.

By then Phebe had established her own family with John Smith. Their intentions had been recorded at Eastham, on Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts, in 1736. Their daughter Ruth was born in 1739 and later married Benjamin Doane.

The will distinguishes Phebe's inheritance from the land assigned to her brothers. It gives a specific view of her position within the Snow family after marriage: she remained a named beneficiary, with a share in the property left after other obligations.
