The life of Ruth Smith Doane
Biography
Ruth Smith was a daughter of John Smith and Phebe Snow in the recorded family line. Her marriage to Benjamin Doane brought her into another household at Eastham, on Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts. Their first recorded child, Uriah, was born in October 1761. William followed in April 1764 but died in June of the next year. A later son was also named William. The genealogy names Joseph, Benjamin and Phoebe among the other children.
Ruth died in August 1778, before the family's later move to Brookfield in inland Massachusetts. The Doane genealogy reports her gravestone as placing her in the thirty-ninth year of her age. She was buried in Eastham's Herring Pond burial ground. Benjamin remarried the following spring.
