The life of Ebenezer Tiffany

Text size

Biography

Ebenezer Tiffany established his home on land east of Mouscochuck Creek, in what is now Barrington, Rhode Island. Bicknell's History of Barrington locates the house near the later Nayatt railroad station in that town, giving a nineteenth-century landmark for an older family property. Ebenezer was a son of Humphrey and Elizabeth Tiffany and was born around 1663.

His public life was connected with the formation of Barrington. The historical research identifies him among the petitioners who sought a separate township in 1711. The petition sought to separate the western part of Swansea, then in Massachusetts, into a town of its own.

The Tiffany genealogy records another specific responsibility in 1728: Ebenezer served on a committee to select a new pastor for the Congregational church. By then he was an older man with adult children. His wife was Elizabeth; their family included Hezekiah, Catherine, Elizabeth, Eleazer, Ephraim, Seth, Sarah and William, as well as an earlier son Ebenezer.

Several children died before him. The genealogy records the younger Ebenezer's death in 1723 and deaths of Seth and Sarah in 1743. Ebenezer himself died in 1747. The same account says that he left no will.
