The life of Ebenezer Tiffany

Biography

Ebenezer Tiffany entered local military service as a young man in Barrington, Rhode Island. Bicknell's history identifies him by his parents, Ephraim and Esther, and birth date, June 10, 1753. It records his appearance with Captain Thomas Allin's company at the alarm in nearby Bristol of April 1, 1776, later guard duty at Barrington, service on Rhode Island—the island also called Aquidneck, rather than the whole colony—and a place in Captain Viall Allin's company in 1780.

Bicknell dates the Barrington guard duty from April 5 to May 20, 1778.

After the war, Ebenezer married Mary Anna Bullock at Barrington in February 1783. Their children included Elizabeth, Sarah, Althea, Mary Ann, twins Esther Viall and Susanna Kent, Ebenezer, Lydia, Hezekiah and Lemira. Susanna died in April 1803, aged ten.

Ebenezer represented Barrington in the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1788 and 1806, according to Bicknell's account. He also served as president of the United Congregational Society from 1807 to 1821. His public responsibilities thus extended from wartime local defence into the administration of town and church affairs.

He died on April 4, 1826. Mary Anna survived until 1848. Their memorials at Princes Hill Burial Ground record the parents of a household whose children had been born over almost two decades. Lemira, the youngest, was in her twenties when her father died.
