The life of Hannah Thayer Pope

Text size

Biography

Hannah Thayer was born at Bridgewater, south of Boston in Massachusetts, in June 1772. She married Freeman Pope in 1795, and the couple made their home in the community later known as Enfield, Massachusetts, in the Swift River valley later cleared for the Quabbin Reservoir.

The Pope genealogy lists eleven children born between 1796 and 1817, including William Ruggles in 1803. Hannah died on August 19, 1817. That same register dates the birth of her youngest child, Caroline Thayer, to the day of Hannah’s death. No cause of death is established by those entries.

Her memorial inscription describes her as being in her forty-sixth year. It preserves her connection with the Pope family and the Enfield community in which she raised her children.

Her memorial is now associated with Quabbin Park Cemetery at Ware, where graves from the reservoir towns were relocated.
