The life of Sarah Titcomb Barnard

Text size

Biography

Sarah Titcomb was born at Amesbury, in northeastern Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border, on February 27, 1766. The town's published birth records identify her parents as Oliver and Anna Titcomb. The family history describes a large household that had already lost an earlier daughter named Sarah before giving the name to her.

She married Tristram Barnard on November 26, 1789. The marriage entry calls her Mrs. Titcomb, with Salley supplied from the intention record. Their family became established at Weare, in inland southern New Hampshire, where Tristram later served as a Baptist deacon.

The family account names children Nancy, Jonathan, Oliver Titcomb, Sarah, Timothy and Daniel. The naming of Oliver Titcomb Barnard preserved her father's full name within the next generation. Her daughter Sarah later married Joses Moulton. The family chronology places Sarah Titcomb Barnard's death in 1829.

The family reconstruction gives her mother’s fuller name as Anna Osgood.
