The life of Elizabeth Rogers Noyes
Biography
Elizabeth Rogers grew up in the family of Nathaniel Rogers and Theoda Miner. The Rogers genealogy dates her birth to April 12, 1748, at the beginning of a series of children whose births were recorded at New London, a port on Connecticut’s southeastern coast. Her parents’ household was later associated with inland Lebanon, Connecticut, where her father’s estate would eventually be settled.
She married John Noyes in 1767 according to the Noyes genealogy. That work places John within the Stonington Noyes family. The couple’s later connection was with Guilford, near Vermont’s southern border with Massachusetts, where their burial memorials are recorded.
Elizabeth is named independently in her father’s will of April 1, 1789 as Elizabeth Noyes. That is an important documentary connection between her birth family and married identity. The will was proved in 1801, followed by estate proceedings in 1802.
Earlier family records place her birth around 1746 and death in 1806, whereas the later account gives 1748 and 1827. The probable identification of Elizabeth S. Noyes Babcock as her daughter also conflicts with other family reconstructions and remains unresolved.
The burial listing associates Elizabeth Rogers Noyes with Groll Cemetery, Guilford, Windham County, Vermont, United States.
