The life of Isaac Chamberlain Noyes

Biography

Isaac Chamberlain Noyes’s family can be followed from Bow, just south of Concord in New Hampshire, into the town records of Temple, in western Maine near Farmington. Born on November 28, 1781 to John Noyes and Mary Fowler, he married Mary Gibbs and established a household whose children appear in the Temple family register.

The register lists George Washington, born in January 1805; Edwin, in November 1806; Mary, in January 1809; Louisa, in March 1811; and Delia Adams, in September 1813. These dated entries give a firm sequence for the first family, during the period when Maine was still a district of Massachusetts. The Noyes genealogy connects these children with Isaac and Mary Gibbs, distinguishing them from the children of his later marriage.

Mary Gibbs died in 1817 according to the memorial account. Isaac subsequently married Rachel Worthley, and the Temple register begins another group of children under Isaac and Rachel’s names. That second household also experienced loss: Daniel, born on June 4, 1821, died on July 15, 1822. The two marriages produced a large, blended family extending across several decades.

Isaac also outlived the young marriage of his daughter Mary to Jeremiah Eaton. Their child was born in June 1826, and Jeremiah died that November. Isaac died at nearby Wilton, Maine, on May 12, 1860. His enduring documentary outline is the movement from New Hampshire into Maine, two marriages, and the succession of births and deaths recorded within his households.

The family genealogy dates Isaac’s marriage to Mary Gibbs at Sidney, Maine, to September 27, 1802.

The burial listing associates Isaac Chamberlain Noyes with Academy Hill Cemetery, Wilton, Franklin County, Maine, United States.
