The life of Capt. Freeman Pope
Biography
The family chronology places Freeman Pope’s birth around 1762. Family accounts call him Captain Freeman Pope.
Freeman Pope came from the Pope family of Bridgewater, south of Boston in Massachusetts. The published town history records his marriage to Hannah Thayer in 1795 and the couple’s removal to Enfield, Massachusetts, in the Swift River valley later cleared for the Quabbin Reservoir.
Their children were born between 1796 and 1817. The household included Ichabod, William Ruggles, Solon Sumner, and several daughters. Hannah died on August 19, 1817, the same date the later Pope genealogy gives for the birth of their youngest daughter, Caroline Thayer.
Freeman later had a wife named Lydia. His memorial gives his death as August 9, 1855 at Enfield and is now associated with Quabbin Park Cemetery in Ware, Massachusetts, where graves from the reservoir towns were relocated.
