The life of Zachariah Carpenter

Text size

Biography

Zachariah Carpenter farmed at Rehoboth, in what is now southeastern Massachusetts. He was the son of an older Zachariah Carpenter and Margaret Child, and married Hannah Carpenter on May 29, 1760. Hannah came from the household of Obadiah and Bethiah Carpenter.

The published genealogy places Zachariah in Rehoboth's First Military Foot Company in 1767. This was a local military affiliation recorded several years before the Revolution. The same account identifies his farming occupation and follows the births of his children through the early 1770s.

Bethiah was born in 1762, followed by Benjamin, Zachariah, Hannah, Otis, Patty and Esther. In 1775 the household contained both older children and a baby: Esther had been born in April. Patty died on September 15, aged three. Zachariah died on October 1, sixteen days later. The family chronology records the two deaths without establishing a common cause.

Hannah was left with the surviving children, including five-year-old Otis and the infant Esther. Zachariah's memorial is at Hillside Cemetery in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

His birth is recorded as February 27, 1734/35, alongside an older chronology using 1734.
