The life of Capt. Daniel Moulton

Text size

Biography

Daniel Moulton grew up in a family that moved from the New Hampshire coast to inland Gilmanton, in the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire, during the 1770s. His parents were Robert Moulton and Sarah Philbrick. The family chronology places his birth in 1763, so he was still a boy when the household moved inland.

He married Polly Lamprey. The town history and a later family biography identify their children as including Joses, Daniel, Polly and Martha, usually called Patty. The younger Daniel became known as General Daniel Moulton; the father is consistently distinguished as Captain Daniel.

Daniel's last journey took him away from home. Lancaster's history records that he died on February 9, 1822 while visiting Winthrop, in central Maine near Augusta. The later family account repeats the circumstance of his death during a visit.
