The life of Joses Moulton

Text size

Biography

Joses Moulton made his adult life in the Gilmanton–Gilford area in the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire. A son of Captain Daniel Moulton and Polly Lamprey, he first married Hannah Dudley in 1813. A daughter, also named Hannah, was born in 1817. His second marriage, to Sarah “Sally” Barnard, took place at Weare, farther south in New Hampshire, in 1821.

The census abstracts show changes in his working life. In 1850 he was listed as a farmer at Gilford; ten years later, at about seventy, he was recorded as a butcher. Sarah was with him in both households. Their daughters Mary and Sarah were still at home in the 1860 account.

A family monument at Union Cemetery in nearby Laconia records both the length of Joses's life and an earlier loss: daughter Eliza died in October 1845, shortly before her eleventh birthday. Joses died on August 5, 1867. Sarah survived him for more than twenty years. Their shared stone also commemorates daughter Mary, who died in September 1887.

These records place his story in a working household whose members remained connected through farming, trade and a common burial place.

The family chronology gives Joses’s birth as 1790, while another compiled account gives 1789. His daughter Julia appears under her married name Julia Ann Moulton Doane in that record.
