The life of Squire Hascall

Text size

Biography

Squire Hascall was a yeoman of Killingly, in northeastern Connecticut, when he made his will in May 1774. Born in 1706 at Middleborough, inland from Plymouth in southeastern Massachusetts, he was a son of John Hascall and Mary Squire. Squire was his given name.

His will described a household with a farm, buildings, livestock, furniture and a weaving loom. He gave his wife Elizabeth the use of a third of the farm and buildings while she remained his widow. A riding horse, a cow, a third of the household furniture, and the loom with its equipment were also assigned to her. Elizabeth was named an executor alongside Samuel Fay.

The children's legacies reflected distributions already made. Several small cash gifts were expressly described as completing a child's portion. The remaining real estate, or its value, was divided among Squire, Jeremiah, Samuel and David. Samuel's and David's shares were to be paid when they reached twenty-one. The executors could sell real estate if the available personal property did not cover debts and legacies, acting with advice from principal men of the town.

Witnesses gave their testimony in July. In August 1774 Elizabeth and Samuel Fay appeared at the probate court at nearby Pomfret, Connecticut, accepted the trust, and presented the will for approval. These proceedings followed Squire's death that year.

The family chronology includes a son also named Squire, born in 1748 and deceased in 1801.

His wife Elizabeth appears in the family reconstruction under the unresolved surname forms Russell and Chandler. His father is distinguished there as John Hascall Jr.
