The life of Uriah Doane
Biography
Uriah Doane was born at Eastham, on Cape Cod in present-day Massachusetts, on October 7, 1761, a son of Benjamin and Ruth Doane. The family genealogy places him in Revolutionary service while still a teenager. It reports his name on a 1777 payroll for Captain Abijah Bangs's company in a Rhode Island expedition, a 1778 pay abstract for Captain George Webb's company, and a 1780 muster and pay roll for Captain Matthias Toby's company in Lieutenant Colonel Hallet's regiment. He served in several separate enlistments.
The same account identifies a period at sea: service aboard the brigantine Tyrannicide under Captain Allen Hallet, from February to April 1779. For 1780 it gives an April enlistment and November discharge, with service in Rhode Island.
After the war he married Lydia Higgins at Eastham in 1784. Their family began on the Cape, with Joel, Ebenezer, Ruth, Cynthia and Elkanah listed among the children born there. In 1793 the household moved inland. On December 17 Uriah purchased land and buildings from Phineas Pratt in Hardwick, in the area later incorporated into Dana in central Massachusetts. A younger son, Isaac, was born there in 1798.
The genealogy places Uriah's death at Dana around 1821.
The family reconstruction names Uriah’s mother as Ruth Smith.
