The life of Nathaniel Rogers

Text size

Biography

Nathaniel Rogers moved from the coastal port of New London to inland Lebanon, both in Connecticut, during the middle years of his life. The Rogers genealogy identifies him as a New London resident through 1763 and as a Lebanon resident in 1764.

Born in 1725, he married Theoda Miner on September 13, 1747. The births of their first nine children were entered at New London. Their family included Elizabeth, later named in his will as Elizabeth Noyes. Theoda died before his second marriage: on April 23, 1778, Nathaniel married Susannah Marvin, a marriage recorded by the Congregational church at Lyme, Connecticut, near the mouth of the Connecticut River.

The genealogy also reports a militia enlistment on January 8, 1778 in Captain Clark’s company under Colonel Johnson. This places a reported period of Revolutionary service in the same year as his remarriage. The enlistment record does not name a campaign or battle.

Nathaniel made his will on April 1, 1789. It named Susannah, sons Jeremiah, Josiah, Daniel, Harris and Nathaniel, and daughters or the heirs of daughters, including Elizabeth Noyes, Theoda Watrous, Hannah Stark, Lucinda Avery and Susanna Hyde. His family had become dispersed among separate households, but the will gathered their claims into one estate. It was proved at Lebanon on October 2, 1801. Proceedings in 1802 concerned the widow’s third and division of the remaining estate among four sons. These probate steps show that his property arrangements continued to require formal settlement after his death.

The Thomas Miner Society’s family directory gives his birth at New London as September 12, 1725 and places his death at Lebanon in 1801.
