The life of John Noyes
Biography
John Noyes was born in 1745 and belonged to the Stonington, Connecticut, branch of the Noyes family. The published genealogy identifies his parents as John Noyes and Mercy Breed and records his marriage to Elizabeth Rogers in 1767. Elizabeth was a daughter of Nathaniel Rogers and Theoda Miner; her father’s will later named her as Elizabeth Noyes.
John’s life eventually took him to Guilford, near Vermont’s southern border with Massachusetts. The burial record places him in Groll Cemetery there and dates his death to October 1827. The family genealogy likewise places his death in that month.
The working family reconstruction identifies Elizabeth S. Noyes Babcock as a daughter of John and Elizabeth. That relationship remains disputed: other accounts give competing parents, and a memorial lists a daughter Betsy with an incompatible lifespan.
