Biography

Amos Chesebrough was born on December 31, 1730 into the family of Amos Chesebrough and Desire Williams at Stonington, on Connecticut’s southeastern coast. On January 23, 1755 he married Mary Christophers, whose parents had both died before their marriage. The town-record transcription from nearby New London, Connecticut, records their marriage and the births of their first children; the Christophers genealogy brings together the larger family of seven.

Their married life lasted eighteen years. Mary died on July 28, 1773, leaving children of differing ages. Another death followed in 1777, when their son Richard died at fourteen. Amos married again on November 10, 1779, to Anna York Gavit.

During the Revolution Amos performed a specific civil duty. Historic Stonington’s patriot register identifies him as an inspector under the Embargo Act in 1780. His service placed him in the practical administration of the war at the local level.

The same register gives his death year as 1790.

Their daughter Mary Chesebrough later married Gideon Babcock.
