The life of Deacon John Bartlett

Text size

Biography

John Bartlett's life centered on North Guilford, the inland part of Guilford in southern Connecticut, where he raised a family with Lois Chidsey and served as a church deacon. Guilford stretches inland from Long Island Sound, the coastal waterway between Connecticut and Long Island. Born in March 1735, he was a son of Daniel Bartlett and Ann Collins. He and Lois married on July 2, 1760.

Their growing household suffered a loss in August 1769 when their son Nathaniel died at four years old. His gravestone preserved his age down to the month. The family also included Samuel, Lucy, Sarah, Stephen, Lois and Eunice. Two years after Nathaniel's death, John and Lois entered full communion together, on March 31, 1771. These records place the couple within the same congregation through both family bereavement and a public commitment to church membership.

John died on March 13, 1801. His memorial at the Old North Cemetery identifies him as a deacon and gives his age as sixty-six. Lois survived him until 1820.

Their daughter Sarah is identified in the family record as Sarah Bartlett Wicks.
