Biography

William Ruggles Pope was born on August 1, 1803 in the community later incorporated as Enfield, Massachusetts, in the Swift River valley later cleared for the Quabbin Reservoir. His parents were Freeman Pope and Hannah Thayer. He was fourteen when Hannah died in 1817.

His first wife, Julia A. Rowe, died in 1834. Their daughters included Mary Esther and Hannah Thayer. William subsequently married Mary B. Beers, with whom he had Harriet Zeviah and Sarah Melenett. These two marriages joined children born across nearly two decades in the Pope family.

William and Mary both died in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1883: Mary on February 9 and William on March 6. Their memorials place them in Providence’s North Burial Ground.

Their daughter’s name also appears as Harriet Zerviah Pope Carpenter. The family history identifies William’s father as Captain Freeman Pope.
