The life of Abigail Follett
Biography
Abigail Follett was living in Attleborough, Massachusetts, when her intention to marry Asa Carpenter of Cumberland, Rhode Island, was recorded on February 5, 1760. The published Carpenter genealogy gives the marriage as March 13 that year and identifies her parents as John Follett and Mary Bishop.
Abigail's married life was spent raising a family whose recorded births stretched across almost three decades. The genealogy begins the children's sequence with Chloe in 1761 and continues through Sally in 1788. John, born in 1774, later married Nancy Bishop; Lydia, born in 1778, died young. These entries show both the duration of Abigail's childbearing years and a loss within the household.
Abigail died in 1788. Sally's birth is recorded in April of that same year. Asa survived her until around 1810. Her place in the family is preserved through the marriage intention, the children's entries and the records of the household that continued after her.
The family chronology places Abigail’s birth around 1737.
