Biography
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed the grocery concern John Wesley Doane had built into a large Northwestern business. His commercial career continued in banking and transportation. He became president of Merchants’ Loan & Trust and held directorships with Pullman and the Illinois Central Railroad.
For the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, Doane guaranteed part of the five-million-dollar fund raised by Chicago citizens.
