The life of Cynthia A. Cargill

Biography

Cynthia Cargill married Lewis Smith Carpenter on November 30, 1843. Their children were born over the next decade: Nancy, Clarissa Abby, Emily Anna, Jesse Albert and Edwin Francis. The family occupied the Carpenter homestead in the area now called North Attleborough, Massachusetts, where Lewis farmed and made cider.

The family record associates Cynthia's birth with Cumberland, in northern Rhode Island near the Massachusetts border, in 1818. Through marriage she became part of a household rooted on the Carpenter property, where her husband had himself been born.

Her memorial records her death on July 21, 1890; the family genealogy instead gives 1880. Lewis survived her for almost six years. Their daughter's Hixon household suffered the death of young Mortimer later in the same year that Cynthia died, making 1890 a year of losses across two generations of the family.
