The life of Nancy White Carpenter

Biography

Nancy Carpenter was a daughter of Lewis Smith Carpenter and Cynthia Cargill. The family lived in the area now called North Attleborough, Massachusetts, where Lewis farmed and produced cider. Nancy belonged to a household that also included Clarissa Abby, Emily Anna, Jesse Albert and Edwin Francis.

She married Edmund Talman Hixon on March 1, 1876. Their children—Abby White, Cynthia, Louise and Mortimer—were born over the following twelve years. The family lost Mortimer in September 1890, just before his second birthday. The cemetery evidence also dates Nancy’s mother’s death to 1890, although the family genealogy gives 1880.

Edmund died in 1898. Nancy survived him for twenty-nine years, living to see her daughters reach adulthood and establish lives beyond the childhood household. Cynthia's marriage to Hugh Walker was one of those changes. Nancy's own life continued until October 31, 1927, the death date recorded in her memorial.

Her burial in the Carpenter Burial Ground returned her to the family setting represented by her parents and husband.
