The life of Elizabeth S. Noyes Babcock

Text size

Biography

Elizabeth S. Noyes married Asa Babcock in 1812, according to the Thomas Minor Society's compiled family account. That account places the marriage at Brookfield, in central New York State, on January 5 and follows a household in which children were born over more than twenty years. Among them were Elizabeth, Richard, Mary, Clara, Edward, John, Henry and Frances.

The family structure identifies Elizabeth's parents as John Noyes and Elizabeth Rogers. Her daughter was Mary Lynde Babcock.

Elizabeth died in 1866. Her memorial associates her death with Syracuse, New York, and her burial with Truxton Rural Cemetery, also in central New York. The gravestone identifies her as Asa's wife and remembers her through the words, “Her children arise up and call her blessed.” The inscription makes motherhood the center of the family's public remembrance of her.

The working family chronology gives Elizabeth’s birth year as 1792. It dates Mary Lynde’s birth to 1818, while the later compilation gives 1817; that difference remains unresolved.

The burial listing associates Elizabeth S. Noyes Babcock with Truxton Rural Cemetery, Truxton, Cortland County, New York, United States.
