68. Dr. Philippe Hecquet (1661–1737)
Philippe was born at Abbeville into the same merchant-rope-maker Hecquet family as Madison’s direct ancestors. He earned a medical doctorate, practiced at Port-Royal-des-Champs, became a doctor-regent and professor in Paris, and served as physician to elite households including the Condé family. He became dean of the Paris medical faculty and wrote extensively on medicine, diet and public health. A genuine eighteenth-century engraved portrait of him survives in the Wellcome Collection.
